I. Technology Operations and Concepts

Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Students).
~Mastery~
I was a business teacher for four years prior to becoming a Technology/Curriculum director. I taught Business Technology during those four years and therefore I had to have more than a basic knowledge of technology in order to be able to teach students the skills to be successful in the business world. My basic knowledge of technology began during my teacher certification classes through Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State). I have increased my knowledge and skills by attending yearly workshops, completing training at MOREnet, and, currently, while pursuing my Master's in Educational Technology.

Prior to my Master's courses, I believed technology was something to learn from. My Introduction to Technology in Schools course changed my ideology of technology integration. As I stated in my reflective paper from this course..."The main concept I gained from this course is that it isn't enough just to use technology because it is what others are doing or trying to keep up with the new advancements in technology by buying every new gadget that comes out. It must add value to the learning activity". I now understand that learning with technology is the only way for meaningful learning to occur. The Concept Map I created reflects my understanding of how teaching, learning, and technology are interrelated.

B. demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.
~Mastery~
My job requires I keep abreast of the ever-changing world of technology. I am a member of MOREnet's technic discussion list. This is a discussion list for technology directors. I am able to keep up on the latest technologies and what's working and what's not. I attend online course offerings through MOREnet, as well as, attend workshops on technology. I, also, have an online subscription to eSchoolNews and Education Week. These subscriptions help me keep up with the latest technological advancements, how they can be integrated into the curriculum, and the latest happenings in American Education. During my Learning with the Internet course, I learned that I needed to research and analyze the vast amount of Internet learning tools. From a tech director's perspective some Internet tools are considered a security issue and this course has helped me recognize the importance of research and analysis before I assume they are too big a risk. During this course I participated in blogs, collaborated with team members to create Team 8's Wikispace, and created a WebQuest. Current discussion lists, educational subscriptions, and the courses while pursuing my Master's have expanded my technological knowledge and skills.
