VI. Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues

Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply that understanding in practice. Teachers:
A. model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
~Mastery~
I must hold myself to a higher standard when it comes to the legal and ethical practices in my school district. As the technology director I am the "leader" of all the technological resources. It is imperative that I follow the same rules for resource use as fellow faculty, staff, and administration. My computer is filtered the same as everyone else's and I am expected to follow the same procedures for exceptions to the filtering policy. At the beginning of each school year, I remind my fellow workers of the appropriate use of all resources. Also, each employee of the district must sign the Employee Network/Internet Use Agreement, stating they will abide by all the rules contained in it. During my Master's studies I created a Policy Presentation that I plan on using during our next beginning of school year in-service to reiterate the policies of the district.

B. apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
~Mastery~
Every year there are new teachers to my district. I am responsible for training them in the use of our technological resources. Since I have no way of knowing the level of technology literacy of incoming teachers, I have devised instructions that take into account multiple learning styles. I recognize that not all learners learn the same way, so the training information contains instructions that include text and pictures. The first set of instructions new teachers receive has to do with logging in to a Novell network, use of a web browser, and very basic instruction on how to use Groupwise email (we house our own email server). The other two training documents are explicit instructions on attaching something to an email and creating a group in email. Those teachers that learn visually love the fact that the instructions contain pictures.

C. identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity.
~Mastery~
As the curriculum coordinator, part of my duties include evaluation of lessons to ensure diversity. In the Electronic Alignment Tool that we use in our district there is a pull-down to select cultural diversity. I evaluate the lesson activities to ensure they cover the diversity indicated. During my Master's studies, I was provided opportunities to evaluate resources for diverse needs of students. The autism activity I completed with a partner provided the opportunity to learn more about autism and to evaluate technology to facilitate learning for diverse learners. Another activity that allows for diverse students is the Performance Assessment project because it provides opportunities for students to research careers of their choice.

D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
~Mastery~
I believe my job requires me to communicate appropriate use of the district's resources. There are many issues that can occur with inappropriate use of resources and uneducated use of resources can result in costly damages. I sometimes get accused of "trying to save the world" when it comes to promoting safe use of the Internet in our district. I fully believe that our students are naive when it comes to Internet use and parents are not educated well on the subject. I feel like it is my responsibility to not only promote safe use, but teach parents how to make sure their child is using the Internet properly. I'm currently working on an "Internet Safety night" to provide information concerning the importance of supervised Internet use at school, as well as, at home. MOREnet has two Internet Safety night events each year and provide copies of each event to use in a district.

My passion to promote safe Internet use is the reason I created this Learning System during one of my Master's classes. I hope to collaborate with our business teacher to incorporate this lesson in the near future. Also, in order to promote the safe and healthy use of resources it is necessary to have policies. I created a Policy Presentation concerning appropriate technology use for my teachers. I believe teachers model behavior for students so it is imperative that they understand the policies and the reasons they are in place.

E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
~Mastery~
I am responsible for all technological resources in my school district. I work with my teachers to make sure there are resources for all students. During my Master's studies, I analyzed my school district's resources and the resulting Facility Survey helped me to ensure equal access. I evaluate our tech program to make sure sufficient resources are available. Part of the analysis concerning equitable resources includes financial considerations. I evaluated our finances in regards to technology in our district and the resulting Financial Analysis helped me to determine the cost associated within our district to support equitable resources.
