III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum

Teachers implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:
A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.

Our curriculum is aligned to the ShowMe Standards. My teachers indicate this alignment in the Electronic Alignment Tool by selecting which standards are covered by which objectives. One of my duties as the curriculum coordinator is to evaluate their curriculum to ensure that alignment is clearly articulated. Our district technology plan uses Missouri's State technology standards and the local Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) to guide it's development.

The WebQuest on web design addressed not only content standards, but technology standards as well. Participants were required to complete research, formulate lists, present their findings, and create a web page. Basic technology skills were necessary to complete this project as well as communication skills. The Performance Assessment project was a lesson plan I used when I was a teacher. The project requires students to research careers, create a slide show using PowerPoint, and then present the slide show to the class. Clearly this assignment touches on content and technology standards.

B. use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
~Mastery~
In our district we have only a few students that spend their day completely with a special education teacher. For those students I collaborate with special education teachers to make sure assignments can be completed taking into account the student's limitations. In one of our special education classes we recently installed the Oregon Trail software. The Performance Assessment project provides opportunities for all students to research careers. This assignment was designed so that anyone could complete it with assistance if necessary. In one of my Master's courses, a partner and myself completed an activity on autism. This activity provided opportunities to learn more about autism and to evaluate technology to facilitate learning for diverse learners.

C. apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
~Mastery~
The Performance Assessment project I created allows for a lot of creativity. Although there are rubrics, they are just guidelines. The students may go above and beyond those criteria (and they are expected too!). It also requires students to use multiple skills to accomplish it. They must try to convince their fellow classmates that the career they are presenting is a good choice of a career. They cannot just say its a good career because they like it, they must figure out why the career would be a good choice for others. The WebQuest on web design required higher-order thinking skills to complete the project. Participants were required to complete research, formulate lists, present their findings, and create a web page. At one point, the participants had to defend their choices of rules for good web design. So they had to go beyond just finding rules and presenting them, they had to defend those choices. Creativity was fully expected for this project as well, since participants were designing their own web page.

D. manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.
~Mastery~
Students in the 21st century require learning activities that involve technology. The Performance Assessment I created is a summative assessment of multiple technological tools. Students work with these tools to complete learning activities involving research, slide show creation, and a presentation. The use of multiple technological tools is also evident in the Learning System I created. Participants will use these tools to complete the activity. The learning activities include research, presentation of the research, design and creation of a web page.

In our school district we use, and I am responsible for managing, Accelerated Reader, Math, and Grammar & Spelling to enhance our curriculum in these areas. Although Accelerated Reading is just a testing program for literacy the other two programs have learning activities for the students. These programs are used to supplement the curriculum and use technology to enhance the curriculum.
