Standard IV:  Assessment and Evaluation (2000)

Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.  Teachers:

A.  apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.

As a teacher of technology, I often have to come up with creative ways to assess student learning.  In Keyboarding, I use the Speed Test Record to monitor student performance.  The students do a pretest and then a post test at the end of each term to measure their typing speed.  I then calculate grades in two ways:  one based on their overall speed and the other based on their percentage of improvement.  Whichever grade is highest is the one that I count.  Students who type slower than average can still succeed based on their improvement.

In Computers class, I use the Standard Report Test as an authentic assessment in which students must correctly format a Standard Report in Word.  Students also complete the Computers Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow WebQuest which contains a detailed rubric for assessing the achievement of learning goals and fulfilling of requirements in the activity.

B.  use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.

Technology provides us with a multitude of tools with which we can gather data.  When I was teaching Special Education, I developed the Spelling Progress Chart, a rather complicated Excel workbook which allowed me to record scores and visually evaluate each student's progress.  In Keyboarding class, I currently use the Speed Test Record to easily calculate and compare student typing speeds and progress.  Finally, my Action Research Plan, which I hope to implement in the upcoming school year, outlines a detailed plan for gathering data, analyzing and interpreting the results, and publishing my findings according the more formalized Action Research model.

C.  apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

One of the most popular ways to gather data in my school district is with the online survey.  This Multimedia Survey Report details an online survey which I conducted with students to find out how they use technology resources at school and at home.  The Technology Support Plan presents a technology support structure that would place key personnel in positions to more closely monitor how students and teachers are using technology.  To examine how students are learning keyboarding skills and determine which method is most effective, I developed this Action Research Plan.
