The design courses work to develop skill in building a wide variety of learning environmnets including systems for direct instruction, constructivist learning, collaborative work and performance support.

Instructional Systems Design

This course was an introduction to instructional design using the ADDIE model. The focus was building solid learning systems for an adult audience and culminated in the creation of an instructor led training program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES ASSIGNMENTS
  • Become an informed instructional designer
  • Identify and describe key instructional design strategies including:
    • Needs Assessments
    • Task Analysis
    • Formative and Summative assessments
    • Developing appropriate instructional strategies
    • Pilot testing
    • Evaluating ann instructional system created
  • Conduct a needs assessment
  • Perform a task analysis
  • Write an instructional design plan
  • Create a professional development instructional system incorporating the entire ADDIE process

Designing Computer Support for Collaborative Learning

This course taught me how to evaluate the use of technology to support and enhance learning through collaboration. In addition to experiencing the pros and cons of collaboration through an online environment we were able to create a collaborative lesson to explore how to successfully implement this technique.

COURSE OBJECTIVES ASSIGNMENT
  • Gain knowledge about computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL)
  • Gain insight into learning as a social activity
  • Learn to structure computer supported learning environments
  • Structure a lesson around CSCL including guidelines for participation, assignments/activities to complete and an evaluation method for the learners.

Designing Computer Support for Collaborative Work

This course is the study of the tools and methods of groupware and communities of practice, including their psychological, social and organizational effects. CSCW addresses the questions of how do people work and cooperate together and how computers can participate and augment that work.

COURSE OBJECTIVES ASSIGNMENT
  • Become familiar with key applications, technology, studies and community resources of CSCW
  • Know approaches for designing CSCW applications
  • Know and practice methods of evaluations for CSCW
  • Design and prototype a CSCW application

Designing and Implementing Online Courses

Using sound design principals, this course explores practice strategies associated with the unique issues of implementing an online course. Topics covered include how to design an overall structure, designing and facilitating online discussion forums and grading and assessing meaningful learning in online courses.

COURSE OBJECTIVES ASSIGNMENT
  • Design online lessons within the framework of meaningful learning outcomes such as knowledge construction, building models, knowledge transmissions and community building.
  • Develop meaningful assessments
  • Conduct a formative evaluation of online course materials
  • Design and implement an online lesson
