Program of Study
ISLT 9459 Designing Direct Instruction

 Description

Applying instructional design models for designing macro-level sequencing using prerequisites analysis and elaboration theory and micro-level lessons using information mapping, component display theory, minimal instruction, and ARCS models.*

Reflection

The purpose of this course is to develop the capability to strategically, appropriately and skillfully apply a variety of pedagogy theories in ways that lead to deeper more meaningful learning.  Learners were required to demonstrate their understanding of learning theories by designing small and medium sized units of instruction and then justifying their design decisions with case studies and research findings.

The "backward design" approach is introduced through reading Understanding by Design, as well as an intense examination of cognitive learning theory (especially as it compares to other learning theories) through reading Writing Training Materials that Work.

Part of the challenge of this course was not only learning a wide variety of learning theories, but learning them to the level of comparing, contrasting, applying, analyzing and using them in conjunction with one another. Appropriately applying a variety of learning strategies, depending upon the level of learning, type of content (procedural vs. declarative) and learners, was emphasized over adoption of one particular learning theory.

Likewise, flexibility in the use of the frameworks and methodologies for employing these learning theories (backwards design, ADDIE) was also emphasized and encouraged.

This course was the most difficult and critical in the program, for the purpose of my professional development.  I immensely enjoyed the opportunity to immerse myself in the different pedagogy theories and practice applying them by designing learning solutions.  I literally use the knowledge and skill I learned in this course every day of my career.
