Program of Study
ISLT 9410 Designing Computer Supported Collaborative Learning

 Description

The purpose of this course is to equip learners with knowledge of the theoretical bases for social and collaborative learning.  Learners also practice the skill of applying these theories to use technologies to facilitate collaborative learning.

The course provides learners a knowledge base of the evaluation, design and implementation of computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL).  This knowledge base must be demonstrated through the creation of a CSCL lesson plan that is built using technologies to support collaboration with other designers.

Reflection

This course provided me the opportunity to examine more deeply social and collaborative learning theories and their practical application through technologies.

Towards the beginning of the course, I was somewhat skeptical of the ability of technology to adequately facilitate social interactions that would lead to collaboration and meaningful learning interactions.  I was pleasantly surprised throughout the course at the learning outcomes realized through the use of a variety of virtual classroom technologies such as document sharing and discussion boards.

This course provided practice at applying social and collaborative learning and the lesson plan artifact I created was completed by peer designers enrolled in the course, who provided valuable feedback for refinement.

After completion of this course, I have continued my practice of employing social and collaborative learning in my work by designing virtual classroom and conference call learning interactions that support the foundation of knowledge learned in e-learning courses.
