Reflection and Artifacts
This course helped me see that just using the internet to research a topic is not really having my students learn with the internet. The internet has so many other amazing options for students and teachers to use other than just research. In my groups' large project we focused on using Shelfari (a digital bookshelf that allows readers to interact with one another online) and Google Apps. We created a document using Google documents and used that document to guide who was responsible for what activities and planning out how we were going to create a site. We all then joined Shelfari and explored the site to see all of the amazing options there were to using it in the classroom. You could open it up to a class discussion much like how we use Blackboard Discussion Boards. After exploring we went back to Google Apps and created a website using Google Sites. Collectively we worked on this site to demonstrate the usefulness of both Shelfari and Google Sites. We created several pages to show off many Shelfari's attributes such as collaborative learning and independent responsibilities.
By using the Google Apps and Shelfari in this class I was able to understand just how easy it would be to create a project similar to what I was required to do and have my students participate. I could have my students create their own Google Site on the Roman Empire or The Laws of Gravity, work collaboratively on creating the site through Google Documents, and even show what books they used by putting them in a Shelfari bookshelf. They could also have a book talk on Shelfari with their classmates by responding constructively to each other. This project was a great way to learn how to allow my students to learn together and with the internet.
