Standard 4: Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices
a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
Digital citizenship and responsibilities are essential to teach to students at a young age. With a new age of individuals who are growing up with the virtual world at their fingertips, it is essential for our children to understand the importance of their choices they make virtually.
In my Introduction to Digital Media Course we discussed copyright laws when it comes to digital media. My discussion post discussed the DRM laws for digital texts. We now have several digital means in which to read information, and there are laws out there that prevent individuals from sharing information the same way we may have with a traditional paper text.

I have worked with the teacher who taught in my building to help students understand the importance of digital citizenship. One of the major issues that take place in our building is Cyber Bullying. We have worked together with the Communication Arts teachers and computers to discuss cyber bullying. Following the digital citizenship discussions, we had the students produce Glogsters about Cyber Bullying.

b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
As a special education teacher, addressing the needs of all learners is essential to my every day teaching. I have found that digital tools and resources have been a great benefit for me and my students in order to be successful in my classroom. I utilize a variety of resources available to my students in order to show success in the classroom. Some of these resources include, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Book Share, and Google Translate.
In my Teaching Online Courses class, as a group we developed a Wiki that discussed how to address behavior disabilities in the classroom. I believe that this is a good demonstration of my understanding of how accommodations can be made to help students learn. Also in my Online Teaching course, I created a lesson. The lesson was created to remediate for students who had previously not understood the information taught in the classroom. Through the use of videos from YouTube and class discussions, as well as remediated skills and Cheat Sheets the goals was for the students to understand the concept. SIS

In addition, our students recently were given email addresses through the school district. The teacher who teachers computers and I worked together to establish some guidelines and expectations for our students and their use of their email during our school day and outside of the classroom. Our objective was for the student to understand the need for them to be appropriate members of society and understand that social protocol and behavior is necessary both in person and virtually. d. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools
The communication and collaboration of individuals from other cultures is a great way to establish and understanding and acceptance of differences.
In my Action Research Course, my Action Research Plan discussed the use of Blogging in the classroom. In one of the research reports that I read, the discussion was on engagement and the use of blogs. One teacher found that a topic the students were discussing in her classroom was similar to a discussion in a classroom in Australia. Through the use of blogs, the students were able to learn the differences in the culture as well as the many similarities.

In my Technology to Enhance Learning course, we were asked to assess other people’s lessons that we found on the KITE website. The lesson I assessed involved a teacher who took data from his students and then the information was reported to a database where it was analyzed with hundreds of other schools throughout the world. The lesson was an interesting usage of data. It allowed the students from the teacher’s classroom, to have a better understanding of the diversity of the classrooms throughout the United States, and how things differ and are similar.
