Reflection and Artifacts
This course was a real eye-opener on the best way to create an assessment in my classroom. My principal has said for several years now that the backwards design that we learned in this course is the way that we should create our lessons. Until this course I thought that’s what I had been doing, but I realize now that it was not always the case. There had been many times that I had started with the general idea and started just teaching the concepts before I had an assessment to actually gauge what the students had learned. Just like we said in the class, it's really hard to know the road you want to take if you do not have a clear destination. That phrase is truly the best way for me to remember that I need to designate the destination, the assessment, and then find the best path to teach and reach it.
I also learned the difference between an effective assessment and a plain assessment. Looking back at some of my lessons and final project assessments, I realized that some things I said/thought I was assessing weren’t actually being assessed. This was not the case in all of my assessments, but this class reminded to be ever mindful of actually assessing what you say you are going to assess. Before I start a new unit, I look at the assessments that I have created and the lesson plans that go with them. I really look to see if my final scoring guide for the unit actually matches up to the lessons. I also see if there is anything I need to change to get a better outcome for that project.
